Cloud Server Technology Explained

Businesses need a hosting provider that provides a server with high availability, high scalability, and high speed, with the flexibility and agility to meet their business technology needs. Cloud technology used in cloud server hosting is fast becoming the solution for any size business in need of a high performance and dependable server that meets their IT infrastructure budget.

What is Cloud Technology?

The ‘term’ cloud basically means a grid of computers that serve as a service-oriented architecture with the purpose of delivering software and data. The ‘cloud’ uses the resources from the computers as a shared virtual computer. The applications have the ability to run independently from particular server configurations or computer. The importance of the hardware diminishes to how the applications work because the applications are in essence floating around in a ‘cloud of resources.’

Cloud computing distributes the computer capacity across multiple computers that may reside in multiple locations. Because the computers are set up to work together, the applications will have the benefit of high computing power. It is the same as if they were all running on a physical machine. In the same way, cloud computing enables processes to run on one set of computers, but, in the event of an unusually high demand for resources, it will automatically ‘farm out’ excess workload to other computers. By doing so, response-time issues resulting from the excessive demands on the server are greatly reduced.

Cloud Technology Benefits

There are many benefits to acquiring hosting services that uses cloud technology. The flexibility that comes with a cloud allows users to utilize as much resources as they need without requiring specific hardware. As well, when a large volume of resources are not needed, users can reduce the amount without any penalty.

Cloud technology provides essential characteristics that make them advantageous for business. Cloud servers can be rapidly deployed and there is no capital investment or start-up costs.  Costs for services are usage based and they can be quickly and easily scaled up or down with no penalty. Many customers leverage the cloud platform thereby making the services multi-tenant.

Three Tier Service Contracts

When customers acquire the cloud, they will contract for services at three tiers that include:

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS): This tier includes grids of virtualized servers, networks, and storage. Most Cloud hosting platforms are considered Infrastructure as a Service.

Platform as a Service (PaaS): This tier includes the abstraction of applications from traditional limits of hardware allowing developers to focus on application development. Platform as a Service offerings consist of an application stack along with the underlying infrastructure. This application stack can be fashioned to give developers the ability to build applications that assimilate into another system.

Software as a Service (SaaS): This tier consists of applications with a Web-based interface that is accessed through Web 2.0 and Web Services. Software as a Service companies provide a hosted software solution available on the Web through a login.

Cloud computing technology allows better computing by centralizing bandwidth, storage, and processing. In today’s highly technological and global business world, cloud technology is an efficient and cost-effective hosting solution.
